May 13, 2025, marks an important milestone not only for the residents of Bielsk Podlaski and Hajnówka but for the entire southern Podlasie region. The reconstruction of Voivodeship Road No. 689, carried out by Unibep S.A., has been officially completed and opened to traffic – fully in line with the construction schedule and project plan.
A New Perspective for the Region
Voivodeship Road No. 689 is a strategic 24.48 km route connecting Bielsk Podlaski with Hajnówka, built to the standards of a class G road. Thanks to this new infrastructure, residents now benefit from safer, more comfortable travel and a boost to the region’s socio-economic development. The investor for the project was the Podlaskie Voivodeship, represented by the Podlaskie Road Authority in Białystok.

“I would like to thank all parties involved in the implementation of this crucial investment – from the investor and designers to subcontractors. But the greatest thanks go to the team of people who worked here every single day. Their professionalism and determination have allowed us to celebrate today’s success. The project was led with full commitment and efficiency by Marcin Dzierżek, who headed the contract,”
said Adam Poliński, Vice President of the Management Board and Director of Infrastructure Construction at Unibep S.A.

From Challenges to Success
The execution of DW 689 was not without its difficulties. In the early phase, even before construction began, the process of obtaining the ZRID (permit for road investment) decision was significantly delayed, pushing the start of works to June 2023. From that point on, however, the project proceeded smoothly and according to plan.
“This is a road the local community has awaited for years. We are proud that Unibep was able to contribute to such an important project,”
said Marcin Dzierżek, Contract Manager. “Within 11 months, we delivered nearly 25 kilometers of modern, fully upgraded roadway. We began in June 2023 and completed in February 2025 – a timeline that, given today’s infrastructure construction realities, is a reason for real satisfaction.”

The greatest challenges came from carrying out works under live traffic conditions – with as many as 39 sections managed by traffic lights, including a brand-new 2.7 km bypass around the village of Hołody built on a completely new alignment. The project also included the construction of a new bridge over the Orlanka River and required precise coordination of construction, design, and specialist teams.
Behind Every Project, There Are People
At peak times, nearly 60 people worked on the construction site – both from Unibep as the general contractor and from subcontractors. This was a demanding investment, both logistically and organizationally, but the experience of the Unibep team and effective cooperation with the investor brought the intended results.
The newly completed DW 689 is much more than a resurfaced roadway – it features modern engineering solutions, reconstructed intersections, bus bays, drainage systems, and comprehensive supporting infrastructure.
