PLN 44 million: This is the total cost of constructing the biomass heating plant in Orzysz. Thanks to this investment, all city residents received access to an eco-friendly heat source. The general contractor of this investment was Unibep SA.
On 28 June 2024, a ceremonial opening of the facility took place. Around two hundred people attended the ceremony, including government representatives, local authorities, financial institutions, the military, as well as contractors and subcontractors involved in the project.
“This is an important day for the residents of our city,” said Zbigniew Włodkowski, Mayor of Orzysz. “We are opening one of the most modern heating plants in the country. We have connected all the multifamily buildings to it. Until now, only half of them used the city’s heating system. As a result, over a thousand and a half chimneys will disappear. And this means that Orzysz has become a city of green projects. Thank you all for your patience and hard work. Because it was not easy.”
The mayor stressed that the operation of the new, eco-friendly heating plant will significantly improve air quality in the city and has a crucial role in the fight against climate change. It also means tangible benefits from the investment: reduced greenhouse gas emissions, savings for residents, and an overall improvement in their quality of life.
Importantly, the new heating plant will also serve a military unit. The military previously used oil-fired boilers. “Now, the buildings are connected to our heating plant. We still have capacity for other buildings in Orzysz that currently use their own heating sources,” said Grzegorz Sobotka, president of the public utilities company in Orzysz. “

“I would like to thank the entire team who worked on this demanding project,” said during his speech Józef Szawara, director of Power and Industrial Construction at Unibep SA. “This is another heating plant we are putting into operation. We have already completed a heating plant in Hajnówka and are finishing two investments in Ełk. We are pleased that our work contributes to raising environmental standards in Orzysz. We wish everyone healthy warmth.”
The general contractor of the investment was Unibep SA. Our task was to design and deliver a turnkey biomass-fired heating plant for the city of Orzysz. As part of the investment, we were required to build the heating plant building with internal installations, a biomass storage facility, and an adjacent biomass storage area with a movable floor. We also had to supply and install two 5.0 MW biomass-fired water boilers, including the biomass transport system, heat recovery system, and exhaust gas discharge system, along with the necessary ash removal installations and supporting infrastructure. The supplier of the technology for the investment is a renowned Polish manufacturer of heating equipment, Intermet from Elbląg.
