New biomass-fired heating plant under construction in Ełk

W Ełku trwa budowa nowej Ciepłowni opalanej biomasą

Unibep is building a new boiler house in Ełk on behalf of the “Świt” Housing Cooperative, which will be powered by heat energy from biomass combustion. The heart of the investment is a modern and economical boiler with a capacity of 10 MW. This is already the second biomass investment being implemented by the General Contractor in Ełk and the fourth in north-eastern Poland.

Unibep started the construction works at the end of March 2023. Finding and contracting suitable technology suppliers to meet the requirements of the investment and expectations of the investor, required significant effort. The contract is being implemented by a consortium including Energotechnika Sp. z o.o.

The assembly of the main equipment is behind us, including a movable biomass floor, fuel conveyors, combustion chamber, boiler, multicyclone, dry economiser, electrostatic precipitator, wet economiser, fans, and flue gas duct system. The execution of this task required the use of specialised transportation equipment, such as a 500-ton crane. “With its help – and that of a smaller one – we unloaded, positioned, and installed the heaviest technological equipment,” said Andrzej Iwaniuk, Construction Manager at Unibep.

Currently, the Construction Team is assembling the components for the aforementioned main technology. The remaining tasks to be completed include finishing works, site development along with the installation of the chimney, and start-up operations after all technological works are completed.

“The new biomass boiler house will provide the “Świt” Housing Cooperative with greater energy security and independence from the prices and availability of hard coal on the market, and it will have a significant positive impact on the environment,” explained Andrzej Iwaniuk.

The growing popularity of biomass investments in north-eastern Poland

The project implemented for “Świt” cooperative one of two biomass projects implemented by Unibep in Ełk. The General Contractor, on behalf of the Ełk District Heating Company, is currently carrying out the task titled “Replacement of the WR-25 coal boiler with a biomass boiler fired with wood chips and the construction of a fuel storage facility and accompanying infrastructure.”

“Overall, we are implementing five biomass projects – primarily in north-eastern Poland. Besides the two previously mentioned projects in Ełk, we are also working on the project titled “Modernization of two boiler houses and construction of a boiler house” at Przedsiębiorstwo Energetyki Cieplnej in Hajnówka,” said Paweł Olczak, Contract Manager at Unibep, adding, “Another very interesting and demanding project is the design, delivery, installation, and subsequent commissioning and handover of the flue gas condensation system for the biomass-fired K1 boiler at the Siekierki Combined Heat and Power Plant.” The ordering party is PGNiG Termika.

As a company operating in the energy market since December 2021, Unibep has quickly gained solid experience in implementing turnkey investment projects. The company successfully competes in tenders aiming at the modernisation and transformation of the energy sector in Poland. Unibep is currently implementing such projects across almost the entire Poland, in Warmińsko-Mazurskie, Podlaskie, Mazowieckie, Kujawsko-Pomorskie, Łódzkie, Dolnośląskie, Śląskie, and Opolskie voivodeships.

“In our activities, we focus on the principles of the green economy, which include, among others, the construction of municipal waste incineration plants, cogeneration installations, gas boilers, district heating systems, as well as projects involving the transformation and modernisation of existing coal-fired systems into low-emission systems. Unibep is also implementing renewable energy projects, such as photovoltaic farms and energy storage systems,” explained Paweł Olczak.
