Report from the construction site of Plażowa and Pstrowskiego Streets in Olsztyn

Tydzień pełen wydarzeń

The Infrastructure Branch of Unibep systematically expands its operations in Warmińsko-mazurskie voivodship, as evidenced by successive tenders won in this part of Poland. One of the most important investments lies in the heart of Warmia, in Olsztyn. Here, in Olsztyn, we are implementing two comprehensive modernisations. The first one concerns Plażowa Street on section from Pstrowskiego Street to Trylińskiego Street The second modernisation concerns Pstrowskiego Street from the intersection with Sikorskiego Street in the intersection with Wyszyńskiego Street and Synów Pułku Street.

We have finished the modernisation of Plażowa Street. The technical acceptance took place on 29 September 2023. In recent days, the construction team of Unibep been carrying out the plantings and finishing works, including the necessary additional works.

In Pstrowskiego Street, the situation is equally promising, with the progress of works reaching 81% (as of 29.09.2023). As part of this modernisation, new structural layers of road and sidewalk surfaces were constructed, and asphalt pavement was laid for both the road and cycling path. Moreover, bus bays laid with paving stones were constructed, and traffic lights were modernised, including a new controller. The investment also includes the replacement of the water supply network and street lighting, construction of retaining walls, and trenchless renovation of the stormwater sewer network using a sleeve system.

“By employing trenchless repair methods, we have the opportunity to both remove minor failures and conduct comprehensive renovation of worn-out sewer networks. It helps reduce the inconvenience of earthworks and minimise the repair costs,” explained Jarosław Bera, Contract Manager.

Difficulties encountered during the construction

Unfortunately, these works were not without difficulties. During the modernisation of Plażowa Street, divergent soil-water conditions arose, necessitating a partial change to 30% of the scope of works. Additionally, collisions with the fibre optic and electrotechnical network, unexpected and not accounted for in the project documentation, posed a challenge for the construction team.

“The works on Plażowa Street were carried out throughout the year, regardless of weather conditions, which posed additional challenges due to the unfavourable soil-water conditions. On 6 August, the torrential rain caused numerous erosions and waterlogging of the embankment, imposing the need for urgent cleanup work,” said Jarosław Bera, Contract Manager.

On Pstrowskiego Street, in turn, there were numerous collisions with gas, fibre optic, and electrical networks, not included in the project documentation. In addition, part of the construction site was occupied by a company constructing the city’s tram line.

“The Construction Team had to manage the coordination of all sectors and conduct the work while maintaining the traffic flow. We had to implement numerous changes in traffic organisation to ensure smooth traffic flow on Pstrowskiego Street,” explained Jarosław Bera, Contract Manager.

Olsztyn Pstrowskiego 2

The involvement of people and use of materials

The expected use of materials includes approx. 10.9 thousand tonnes of asphalt mixtures, 8.4 thousand sq. m. of concrete pavers, 2.2 km of concrete curbs, 9.3 km of concrete edges and 3.4 km of stone edges.

Currently, an average of 30 people is working on the investment project, with as many as 49 workers in peak time. They are qualified specialists, whose commitment and effort are crucial for the successful implementation of the investment.

Infrastructure investments in Olsztyn constitute an important step in implementing the development strategy of Unibep in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship. The work is in full swing, and the residents of Olsztyn can expect an improvement in the quality of life and road safety upon completion of the investment.
