Unibep secures a contract worth over PLN 114 million with PGNiG TERMIKA

Unibep has concluded an agreement for the turnkey implementation of the project called “Installation of a flue gas condensation system behind the K1 boiler at the Siekierki Heat and Power Plant in Warsaw”. The ordering party is PGNiG Termika SA, a leading producer of heat and electricity through cogeneration in Poland. The value of the agreement is approx. PLN 140.3 million gross, i.e., approx. PLN 114.1 net.

“The value of this agreement, exceeding PLN 114 million net, is a breakthrough accomplishment for our still young team. Just a reminder, the energy operations within the structures of Unibep debuted at the end of 2021. Though, the value of the agreement serves as evidence for the high quality of services we provide in the field of power industry construction. The Investor, PGNiG, who owns numerous facilities nationwide, presents us with an excellent opportunity to expand our operations and build our reputation in the tightly-knit power industry. With utmost certainty, the credentials acquired after successful completion will serve as a strong asset, opening many doors for us in the world of energy, emphasised Przemysław Janiszewski, Power and Industrial Construction Director at Unibep.

“The contract holds particular importance for us in various aspects. First of all, the technology and the scope of works will allow us to develop in a new field, which is flue gas condensation systems. On the other hand, as a company operating in the energy market since December 2021, we have already gathered a lot of experience in turnkey implementations. Currently, we are conducting works for such companies like Energetyka Cieszyńska (cogeneration), PGE Energia Ciepła Oddział w Rybniku (cogeneration), Spółdzielnia Mieszkaniowa “Świt” w Ełku (housing cooperative), Gmina Miejska Hajnówka (municipality), Przedsiębiorstwo Energetyki Cieplnej w Ełku (cogeneration), and Przedsiębiorstwo Usług Komunalnych w Orzyszu (public utilities). We also cooperate with the company ArcelorMittal Poland,” added Krzysztof Panek, Energy Market Director at Unibep.

The scope of the agreement

The task of the General Contractor consists in designing, delivery, and assembly, including the commission and delivery for use, of a flue gas condensation installation for the biomass-powered boiler K1 in the Heat and Power Plant in Siekierki.

“The technology of flue gas heat recovery is particularly efficient when burning wet fuels, which includes biomass, as the moisture in the fuel evaporates during the combustion process, otherwise resulting in significant energy loss in the overall energy balance of the process. We estimate the nominal thermal energy recovery thanks to the flue gas condensation to reach 26 MW,” explained Magdalena Siwińska-Dulik, Coordinator and Technologist at Unibep SA.

As part of the task, Unibep will also carry out the modernisation of a 170-metre-long chimney, which involves replacing chimney ducts.

“The existing chimney is a single duct chimney, to which exhaust fumes from boilers K1 and K2 are discharged. Our task involves installing two chimney DUPLEX steel ducts inside the existing chimney. This will enable separate measurement of exhaust emissions from each boiler. We also must ensure that the material employed is resistant to the parameters of the exhaust fumes, including significantly lower temperatures, compared to the flue gas temperature where the heat is not recovered,” continued Magdalena Siwińska-Dulik.

The commencement of the investment is scheduled for the second quarter of 2023, and its completion for the fourth quarter of 2025.
