Galeria Północna is open

Warsavian Galeria Północna was opened on September 14th 2017 at noon. The whole investment was executed by Unibep SA and commissioned by the GTC company. This is the largest such building that Unibep SA has ever executed.

The execution of Galeria północna was supervised directly by the construction manager - Dariusz Wawrzak. He will remember the project in the following way: "The erection of Galeria Północna can be described as a constant, unceasing change and decision-making processes. However, in order to make reasonable, good and well-considered decision, one needs reason and patience. Sometimes even courage. Let us not forget that such a large project involves a huge amount of emotions, sleepless nights, countless discussions, tough moments and, last but not least, moments of enormous joy. Not to mention a huge amount of responsibility" - states Dariusz Wawrzak.

The building is breathtaking - large spaces, bright and wide passages covered in glass. The ventilation systems posed quite a challenge in this type of building.

"We have 94 big smoke ventilators (the diameter of the fan is over 1 meter), 147 stream ventilators and 30 smaller ones. "It should also be noted that Galeria Północna is equipped with over 1000 fire dampers whose position must be adjusted depending on the executed fire scenarios" - explains Jarosław Sadowski, the head of the electric works at Unibep SA.  "Starting such a large anti-smoke or airing system required the work of a huge number of people, well-coordinated actions and efficient organisation of the process". The printed version of the firefighting security and protection plan design barely fitted on 5 A0 pages.

"We installed 55 000 meters of active pipes for the sprinkling system, 15 000 sprinklers, over 1 000 fire dampers and 120 ventilators which can be used in case of fire and which had to be tested in particular smoke zones, as well as 45 ventilation centres" - adds Tomasz Miłosek, the head of the sanitary works at Unibep SA.

Galeria Północna - a small town

Galeria Pólnocna is a small town that never sleeps. "The centre needs enormous amounts of energy, about 8 MW, which equals the average use of energy of about 670 houses" - explains Jarosław Sadowski.

The size of Galeria Północna is enormous - it takes about 20 minutes to walk around its walls.

"Everyone says the centre is huge. But is it really? The plan fits on one A4 page (haha). Seriously speaking, now, when I think of Galeria północna, I think about all the people who built it. I mean the Unibep SA crew, the investor's representatives and subcontractors. Each action was carried out by a specific person" - says Piotr Dykałowicz, the construction manager of Galeria Północna, Unibep SA.

It is worth mentioning that the cornerstone for the project was laid in September 2015, and in the next year - in September 2016 - the investor, general contractor and all involved in the development of the shopping centre, took part in the topping out of the building.

"I feel great joy when I look at Galeria Północna today. We are satisfied with both the time and quality of the executed job. I would like to thank the investor for two things: that they trusted Unibep SA two years ago and that we could provide each other with support throughout the project" - says Leszek Gołąbiecki, the President of the Board of Unibep SA.

People and their competences are the most important

How do people participate in the construction of the largest shopping centre in Poland feel?

"When I look at Galeria Północna today, I feel proud and happy with the work completed by my team - the erection of such a large building is quite a logistical and organisational challenge. Even though the project was constantly modified, we managed to complete it" - claims Paweł Szydlik, the head of the contract, Unibep SA.

In what way can Unibep SA make use of the experience gained during the execution of Galeria Północna?  "We know who we can count on and what they are capable of, which is really a lot" - summarises Marcin Drobek, the Vice President of Unibep SA and the head of the construction department. "The technical competences of our whole company have improved, as about 60 engineers participated in this contract. Thus, we will benefit from this experience in the future. Unibep's motto, that everything can be built with hard work and trust in our workers, the contracting party and subcontractors, was once again proven. The fact that Unibep's portfolio will be enriched by the completion of one of the largest shopping centres in Poland is also significant. All in all, we put a great deal of effort into Galeria Północna, but we are satisfied with the final outcome and with our team's professional development.
